What does PMO mean to you?

PMO is used as an overarching term when applied to the support of Portfolios, Programmes and Projects with no standard or recognised use of the PMO acronym. Our own research through the Arras People Project Management Benchmark Report (PMBR) has identified a host of names associated with PMO, the most common being:

  • Portfolio Management Office
  • Programme Management Office
  • Project Management Office
  • Enterprise PMO (ePMO)

 

In addition the function of the PMO also varies by organisation with the most common being:

  • It provides administration support to programme / project managers
  • It provides added value services such as MI, reporting and planning to programme / project managers
  • It provides best practice, standards, governance etc. to support the project management function
  • It provides organisational support, enabling strategy, senior management support etc.
  • It provides an entity in which all our PPM practitioners reside
