Banking and Insurance are the two major categories within the Financial Services Sector. Moreover, they are also likely to be both the fastest growing and fastest changing lines of business.

Many other supporting lines of business have grown up around Banking and Insurance whether that be wholesale, foreign exchange, commodity banking or direct or reinsurance business lines. Adhering to policy change and ensuring proper implementation to pass stringent audit can mean extensive change, not just to business process but also with regards for the need to look at training people and to guarantee the supporting business systems and IT are in line and fully operating to the need of the business. Another topic of interest are STP (Straight Through Payments), where the front office and the back office may become one logical and potentially physical entity.

With insurance looking at the impact direct line insurance had on the market, questions have come to the fore, including "What changes will this make with online access from many different devices and the increase in micro payments and reconciliation of processed transactions?" Micro payments also serve as a major challenge in financial services project management. For example,  consider tolls and car parking, plus the most recent satellite insurance charging based on where you are driving and at what time. Not to mention pay as you go phones – or pay as you go insurance!

Projects within the finance sector have to be delivered correctly: the industry deals with other people's money and all results are scrutinised whether it be an account statement or insurance schedule it must be right and exhibit an audit trail.

Changes in governance procedures or recommendation from the FSA can create complex changes that need careful planning and management to ensure deliverable meet legislation requirements. A Programme approach can often be the solution whereby the solution requires delivery across a number of client-facing businesses and any number of business support services. There are many ways to design the programme; however one single business unit needs to be in charge and have authority that crosses all business entities to ensure the deliverables are made in timely manner. A programme approach can assist in ensuring that projects are run in accordance with the business objectives of the organisation.

As with any change it likely involves people process systems and technology.
