DRS Data Services & Arras

Right person, right place, right time, right recruiter

DRS Data Research Services

"Good service, prompt response from initial query."

Operating in over 50 countries and listed on the London Stock Exchange, DRS Data Services is a leader in the design and manufacture of data capture solutions. DRS Data Services manage data capture projects of varying sizes and complexities worldwide, priding itself on 'scanning excellence' and 'provision of sophisticated data capture software'.

DRS' core business is large volume, time critical projects such as examination processing, elections, population census and financial document processing. Complete solutions are implemented using the Company's extensive expertise in document design, printing, forms scanning, software, logistics, project management and consultancy.

DRS turned to Arras People in September when they were looking for an Interim Project Manager that could handle software development projects in an SQL/database environment. Reporting to the Development Manager the successful candidate would be able to ensure the effective contribution of the project team including technical and non-technical contributors.

'Will They Mind Not Making Any Major Decisions?'

The task in front of Arras People's recruitment consultants was not unique: Identify an Interim Project Manager who could step right in and take charge of the development of an existing product. But the role the new hire would be expected to step into WAS unique: In essence, Arras People was searching for a Project Manager willing to take over a project where they would be willing to accept decisions already made by others.

Undaunted, our recruitment consultants launched into the role, in spite of a credit crunch that had forced many contractors to take a second look at just what they needed in a day rate. Despite pre-made decisions in the role and exterior factors out of DRS control, Arras People advertised on certain key sites and found their candidate after a telescreening conference.

The candidate was unusual as he was looking for an interim contract to tide him over until he found something more permanent. Two interviews followed between the candidate and DRS within the span of six days - one with the hiring manager and another with the Head of Department.

Willing to Instruct and Develop

The conclusion made by DRS following the second interview with the candidate was that he was light on pure PM experience, but clearly not so in PM knowledge.

Recognising the candidate had a strong mix of knowledge and potential, DRS offered him the contract, thinking he would fit into the role's requirements. However they felt he would require some direction / mentoring from the Development Manager (which is not what one usually looks for in a contractor). Accordingly a reduced rate was offered which the candidate was happy to accept; he agreed with the feedback.

Rising to the Occasion

DRS indicated a strong regard for Arras People's initiative and efficiency.

'Good service, (with) prompt response from initial query,' one DRS insider said when asked for feedback. She added that compared to other recruitment providers, Arras People was 'in terms of Project Management candidates - very good.'

It's another example of how Arras People is tailored to meet expectations - then exceed them. Another day, another quality candidate from the leader in project management recruitment.

PMO Manager

PMO Manager Recruitment

Capital Ambition were looking for a Programme Assurance Manager to come on board and essentially run a lot of the Project Office activity at Capital Ambition. The role was to support upwards of 90 projects across the London boroughs, so they were looking for a candidate with a strong public sector background and - obviously - experience of managing not only PMOs, but delivering projects, too.

Call Centre Project Management

Fluency Voice Technology, recently acquired by Syntellect Ltd, a call centre software provider, used Arras People to appoint permanent project management resources. Working within the professional services department, the project manager's prime responsibility was delivering client projects. An understanding of call centre environments and Telephony, Voice and CTI technology alongside the project management skills were crucial.
