Six Sigma is a business management strategy originally developed by Motorola in the USA. It is a systematic method for improving the operational performance of an organisation by eliminating variability and waste with and seen by many to have a widespread application across many sectors.

“sigma” stands for standard deviation from the mean in a normal distribution.

Recent years have seen some practitioners focus on “Lean Six Sigma” which brings together the Lean Methodology with the Six Sigma Methodology.

At this time there is no single organisation in the UK which oversees a standard body of knowledge or standardised Six Sigma testing and certification process.

Practitioners are awarded “belts” in recognition of their levels of expertise;

• Yellow Belt
• Green Belt
• Black Belt
• Master Black Belt
