You Have a Job, So Why So Unhappy?

Time to put your imagine hats on!

Imagine going to a top-of-the-line concert or sporting event at an ancient, outdated stadium. You know the ones: seats littered with paint chips, poles obstructing views, a five mile walk to the nearest bathroom or trash can. You turn to the friend/parent/spouse you turned up with aghast. “This is ruining the experience for me, I can’t take it anymore.”

Oblivious, they retort: “C’mon, do you know how lucky we were to get these seats?”

In these days of recession and dole benefit extensions, a similar pooh-poohing of job-related frustrations seems to be festering. To those who are in employment but still on the lookout for better opportunities, they scream: “C’mon, do you know how lucky you are to have a job?” And yet, that pole still obstructs your view of the career you want. You have a right to want better for yourself and your family.

We want to take a pulse of project managers on this matter, and hope to include some of your responses in an article for our August issue of Project Management Tipoffs, the project management & recruitment issues newsletter from Arras People. We want to consider all of those pole obstructions, distant bathrooms and chipped paint that force employees/contractors to look for greener pastures to practice their trade. In short:

Why Do People Quit Their Job To Find Another?

From our own analysis, choices such as work-life balance, money and no career progression are all relatively common. What are the others?
