Understanding and Capitalizing on OPM3 – Maturity Modelling

This is an area I know very little about. I was fascinated by this article written about OPM3 (Organizational Project Management Maturity Model). My question is how do busy people in project environment ever get to look at how they operate when perhaps the output may not be important to them.
I guess the the best way is to have a 3rd party come in and “do it to you” and then once set up have the model explained so ongoing evaluations can be made to track and trace progress. The value and incentive being to see and advertise the progress your organisation is making, The article that spurned my interest can be found in the allPM Today January 2007 News Letter – I would be intersted to hear about experience of using these types of models and the beneefits achieved to the business.
