The Alternatives to PRINCE2

As you can imagine, we have a lot of conversations about PRINCE2 at Arras.

Often its about enquiries from people looking for a new role in project management. The split into two camps – those with minimal project experience who are looking to get into project management and want to do some training (or have already take PRINCE2 and don’t know what to do next). The second camp are those with lots of project experience who have perhaps neglected their professional development and now, having found themselves in the marketplace looking for a new job, they’ve noticed that all the job ads have PRINCE2 written on them.

PRINCE2 is not the be all and end all for project management training – we’d be in trouble if it was!

So what should people be doing as an alternative to PRINCE2?

You have three options.

Here’s the first.

Do an industry recognised certification

That’s training and certification from people like PMI, APM and BCS.

They have their own training courses and accreditation at different levels.

Do a really great fundamentals of project management course

These are generally not accredited in the same way as the professional bodies mentioned above – so there’ll be no badge to stick on the CV but they will teach you the fundamentals of project management (which PRINCE2 doesn’t)

Who does them? Lots of training organisations do – and that often makes it difficult for people to choose where the spend their training bucks.

You need to ask around – ask your peers – check out things like CourseConductor.com – or take part in this year’s Census where we ask project practitioners to share their best project management training experiences. Take part and you’ll receive those insights early in 2017.

Do a combination of different things – project / behavioural / business

PMI trianglePMI made a great change to the way they consider a project practitioner should focus their development.

They launched something called the talent triangle which is essentially development in project management, behavioural skills (they call it leadership) and business skills.

PRINCE2 has taken the headlines for project management training for many years – yes it’s still popular as something to stick on a job advertisement yet many of those who work in project management will be quick to tell you that organisations don’t tend to use PRINCE2.

What organisations really want to say to you on the job advertisement is that “we really want someone who understands and has experience of using the tools and techniques of project management to deliver the project but we don’t want to write all that out so we’ll just stick PRINCE2 on there so you get the picture”

So give it to them – show them you have the understanding and experience of project management tools and techniques – show them that it doesn’t just come from the PRINCE2 view of the world. Show them that as a professional in project management you consider all the good practice that’s out there in the work you do.

Consider ALL the alternatives to PRINCE2.
