Taking Time Out of Your Project Management Career – Q&A

I’ve taken a couple of years out to care for a relative and now I’m finding it impossible to get back into a project management role, any advice?

Hopefully you are making it clear on your CV what you have been doing for the last few years; hirers don’t like to see unexplained gaps and would prefer to see something rather than nothing.

You don’t mention what types of roles you have been applying for but there could be some problems with trying to gain the same level of role you held previously.

From a hirer’s point of view if they have two CVs with similar experiences and skills, with one candidate with a gap and one without, they will always prefer the one without – it’s human nature unfortunately.

Have you thought about lowering your expectations a little – taking a small step back now in order to regain the lost ground?

This might actually be a good time to ease back into something with less responsibility or a lower risk project – just until you get back into the swing of things again.

You should also make sure your learning and development is up to date at this point too, is there anything you’ve missed out on whilst you’ve been out of the profession?

Also consider getting out and about at networking events, seminars and chapter meetings to help you not only find potential opportunities in your area but to also help you understand what’s been happening in project management over the last few years.

    Hi Team,

I am currently working towards a MSc in Engineering Project Management in London and would like to get involved in some voluntary work within a Project Management organisation.

    Regards,
