Reminiscing About Podcasts

We’ve got some equipment upgrades on the way for the benefit of the quality of our podcasts, which you’ve willingly downloaded by the thousand. The Project Management Tipoffs Podcast from Arras People has been the companion to our newsletter since we first gave this podcast thingy a try in March 2011. Actually, it was an excuse to exercise my broadcasting pipes crying out for any opportunity to talk to a captive audience that he couldn’t see whilst people in the other room snickered at my wannabe conduct. But I digress.

Because we’re upping our game a bit (can anyone say “catchy little tunes?”), I thought it might be nice to take you inside some random bits and pieces from our first year of podcasting today. Give ‘em a listen or subscribe to them (also on iTunes) when the long weekend of chores and DIY requires some self-help, analysis and – most importantly – my voice.

March 2010 – Still our most downloaded, this podcast dealt with the 2010 Benchmark Report, specifically with regard to the competencies so crucial to project management. We tied it into your career, talking about progression and the possibilities of a hierarchy in PM.

April 2010 – This was all about Redundancy in Project Management, and though we looked at it from a scope of the economic turmoil, it’s lessons about the dangers facing PPM personnel at risk, contractors, and the entertaining trek of one man who blogged his way back to work.

May 2010 - Want to get the tips on becoming a true Professional? Since this little ditty came out, the Association for Project Management has introduced its Registered Project Professional qualification, so that may become the new hot button. But this podcast remains essential for being the part as well as having the certificate on the wall.

June 2010 – There are some tricks to our business; this podcast gave listeners worthwhile know-how of things like the hidden vacancies that are out there, and some must-have tips on what you can do to harness your experience with a recruiter.

July 2010 – We started our three-month pseudo-Back to the Future motif with Tipoffs this month, going back to previous issues to learn more about our previous thoughts on the path to project management becoming a profession, and updating those articles for the modern audience.

August 2010 – So long, Biff: now we jump ahead to 2015, where we’re suddenly dodging flying cars! No, actually, we just reflected and updated old articles related to career changes, be they related to permanent to contracting or just the sheer need to leave your role.

September 2010 – PRINCE2′s re-introduction as PRINCE2:2009 turned one year old that month. We celebrated by offering space to Andy Murray, who engineered the revamp of this standard-bearing certification in project management training. We also tapped into how training wasn’t something you could put off whilst you were working.

October 2010 – We’ll re-examine this notion in the May edition: the crises facing the public sector in the midst of a change of government and its policies. We talked about what the freeze meant to those in the project management field, and how to make a switch to the private sector.

November 2010 – This edition previewed and reviewed the Project Management Benchmark Reports for 2011 and 2010, respectively. Pretty straight-forward, frankly.

December 2010 – A smorgasboard of guest contributors, like Todd Williams, Ron Rosenhead and Elizabeth Harrin tackle our predictions for 2010, and offer some of their own views on where project management is heading in 2011. Now might be a good time to review those predictions, eh?

January 2011 – A new portfolio management guidance came out earlier this year, and we spent this edition previewing this relatively new & uncertain concept for project management personnel. We also took in your views of PfM and provided an overview of what its meant to provide to your projects.

February 2011 – This special edition Training Directory introduction podcast gave our listeners a better understanding of the training mechanisms available to project managers these days, with specific concerns for the things that allow you to make the most of the training possibilities now available to you.

March 2011 – Success is attainable in this issue, where we talked with a couple of successful project professionals, Keith Baxter and Derek Huether, and learned more about their niche paths to recognition, status and regard in PPM. We also delved into what you thought constituted a successful project manager.

April 2011 – Full circle! Last Thursday, the podcast discussed our newsletter on workplace challenges, taking on those age-old demographic struggles regarding age and gender, and one reader seeks our advice on just how a young project professional can truly command the respect of their peers.
