Don’t know if anyone is aware of the PM Podcast?
I listened to episode 55 on Friday night as I was driving to Newbury (what an exotic life I lead!), the topic up for discussion was project management certification. The podcast is led by Cornelius Fichtner – a curious character (it took me ages to work out who he sounds like – I’ll not share those thoughts at this point – have a listen and let me know what you think). The podcast is very US-based at the moment but it does still give food for thought wherever in the world you are based. I’m going to listen to more of them on long journeys and let you know what I think
Anyway, back to the PM Certification podcast, the discussion around knowledge based certifications (in my world I take that to mean like PRINCE2) versus competence based certifications (along the lines of PMI?) made me really think about the market of training and accreditation available today and wonder why the world has gone PRINCE2 mad – it is after all just a question and answer paper or multiple guess (Foundation anyway), I mean what does this tell us about the project manager’s capabilities, attitudes, personality and approach to delivering projects – nothing! It demonstrates an ability to read a book and answer questions – period!
The time is ripe for a really good accreditaiton / certification scheme in project management and the certifications talked about in the podcast really do give some food for thought.
Let’s start a campaign to oust PRINCE2 training – money for old rope?
