Project Management Android Apps

Earlier this year, we informed How to Manage a Camel readers about some of the leading iPad applications for project management practitioners, thanks in part to an article by Andrea Contreras at Project Management Training. True Camel aficionados will also remember that we expanded upon her article slightly (which included pricing for her list of 25 excellent apps in US Dollars). For the main reason that our UK-heavy readership would benefit from GBP pricing.

We took to wondering recently: as the tablet and smartphone market expands and pulls in customers, which of those applications transition easily to the Android market? By limiting the applications & tools for project managers simply to the Apple collection of tablets, we realised our reach here was minimal and not quite as popular. Therefore, I’ll use today’s post to go through those same applications as they are (or aren’t) made available for Android tabs.

Evernote is one of the leading project management-friendly applications available for both Apple iOS and Android platforms.

But in a slight change from last time, I’m going to highlight other articles that have compared android tools related to project management. Comparing prices between Apple and the Google-led Android market should also prove enlightening, especially in a holiday season in which the electronic tablet ranks among the top gifts. Not every application crosses over for both iOS and Android use, so we’ll have to plug some holes in our list.

Here’s who I’ve sourced:

As a refresher, here are the top 25 apps & prices (GBP) for the iPad, as listed in July (current prices in parentheses).

  1. Project Planner HD: £3.49 (now £3.99)
  2. TrackerBot (NOW RENAMED “Pivotal Tracker”): FREE
  3. e-Task Project for iPad: FREE
  4. Projector: £5.99 (now £2.99)
  5. Bento: £2.99
  6. SG Project 2: £5.99, Pro version: £23.99 (now £6.99 and £27.99)
  7. Project Manager: FREE
  8. Time Scale – Project Management: £1.19 (now £1.49)
  9. Things for iPad: £11.99 (now £13.99)
  10. WebEx for iPad: FREE
  11. OmniFocus: £23.99 (now £27.99)
  12. Task Cards: £1.79 (now £1.99)
  13. Toodledo: £1.79 (now £1.99)
  14. My Timetable: £0.59 (now £0.69)
  15. CalenGoo: £3.99 (now £3.89)
  16. SaiSuke: £5.99 (now £6.99)
  17. Organizer: £4.99 (now £5.49)
  18. Dropbox: FREE
  19. Expense Tablet for iPad: £0.59 (now £0.69)
  20. Keynote: £5.99 (now £6.99)
  21. Omni Invoice: £2.99 (discontinued)
  22. Evernote: FREE
  23. Numbers: £5.99 (now £6.99)
  24. DocScanner: £2.99 (same)
  25. Pages: £5.99 (now £6.99)

From that Top 25, here are all the applications (or in some cases, equivalents) that are also available to the Android crowd, based on a search for that title, and also which version has a better user rating:

2.  Pivotal Tracker – Apple iOS
10. WebEx – Android
13. ToodleDo – Android (tool is more limited in Android, but universally liked by users)
14. My Timetable – Android (not the same tool)
15. CalenGoo – Android (both well-liked by users)
17. Organizer – Android (Android version known as Google Tasks Organiser, available both Free and for a cheaper than Apple iOS £1.88)
18. Dropbox – Android
22. Evernote – Android (Android also features Evernote Widget)
24. DocScanner – Apple iOS

If you’re counting at home, that’s a mere nine out of 25 that are available in some way on both platforms; but eight of those nine Android products outrate the Apple iOS counterparts, and every single Android version or variation is either cheaper or the same price. Something to think about.

Still, it seems that the list is quite small by comparison to the iPad list, and needs some rounding out. Hence, the above link to the Mr Manager blog post, which we’ll methodically list below. Just some previously unmentioned apps worth considering, broken down by category and with current price added. Check all products out on the Android Market website.
