A discussion with authors (Paul Naybour and John Bolton) of the newly published self study guide for the APMP qualification quickly turned into the consultants here at Arras ‘volunteering’ as guinea pigs. The idea being to test whether the resources provided a reasonable alternative to dedicated courses. Over the next few months we will report our progress as well as give an honest appraisal of the study guide.
Here at Arras we have a wealth of experience in the programme and project field as well as in project related qualifications. The question of which route people should take is one that we get asked frequently and so this seemed an excellent opportunity to find out first hand what is required, as well as refreshing our own project knowledge.
It was with a modicum of trepidation that the first ‘study’ group commenced here at Arras. The group consists of Lindsay, Nicola, Gary and Mick (the Rod, Jane, Freddy & Bungle of Arras – you can decide which is which). The common view is that it is some time since we had undertaken self study (some more than others) and by forming a study group we could support each other through the process.
The first decision we had to make was when should we take the exam and hence how long did we have to study? An initial date was offered as late May but this was considered too early and also tied in with one of our busier times. This is an important consideration for anyone considering taking training as you want as few distractions as possible. This led us to aim for August/September which translates into a key chapter every 2 weeks; a timescale everyone was comfortable with – or at least that is what they said.
Initial views of the subjects ahead presented challenges for everyone. New subjects, exam techniques and re-learning terminology to fit BOK were all discussed. Our starting challenge was to complete the first examinable chapter and meet up before the Easter break to see how we got on.
