Earned Value Management Qualification from APMG-International

APMG-International announced last week they would be offering a new Earned Value Management (EVM) certification they say “helps candidates measure and control their project, program, and portfolio schedules and budgets.” The EVM certification is based on best practices of project management professionals who have applied EVM principles to projects in several different industries.

“EVM enables the creation of accurate forecasts and reports to satisfy even the most stringent governance requirements. It is widely accepted in the public and private sectors as a tool for Project Managers to measure actual project performance and to predict future performance. EVM is at the heart of the best project controls systems,” Richard Pharro, CEO, APMG said.

There are two levels to the EVM courses and certification: Foundation and Practitioner. The Foundation level course provides a comprehensive overview of EVM terminology and methods. APMG-International says that it is “designed for Project Managers, managers, department heads, and others who need a better understanding of the elements of EVM.” Moreover, they report The Foundation exam consists of 40 multiple choice questions to be answered in 60 minutes, as a means of determining the candidate’s knowledge of EV terminology and theoretical knowledge of methods. Candidates must score 65% correct answers to pass.

The Practitioner level course (to be released at a later date) is for professionals who need to demonstrate a working knowledge of EVM in order to further their professional development. The Foundation level is a prerequisite.

The EVM certification has been developed by APMG-International in partnership with APM’s EV SIG.

Steve Wake, who manages EV SIG, said, “This qualification was developed so that employing and deploying organizations could make objective choices about project team selection, recruitment and development.  Anyone who passes this qualification is likely to be able to function more rapidly, effectively and knowledgeably in their team. Earned Value is the Project Control method of choice on the largest projects in the world. In the UK, the London Olympics is using it very effectively and its use is spreading rapidly through the construction and IT sectors. Possession of the qualification is likely to enhance any job application.”
