For those of you who don’t already know it, Arras People runs and organises much of its business activities from the head office in Greater Manchester. And for the remaining few out there who don’t already know this as well, Manchester was one of several UK cities that bore the brunt of the recent riots and looting in major British metropolitan centres.
The response in the wake of this collection of lawless, inconsiderate actions has enveloped Britain and particularly Manchester in a wave not of outrage, but rather of a regained sense of nationalism, self-identity and appreciation for the speedy recovery of communities that felt the rath of the mindless many. Out of the indirection of looting, we are discovering the direction toward a better sense of community pride.
We at Arras People are proud to be a part of the I Love MCR campaign, now being ably organised on Facebook and elsewhere in social media and in tangible face-to-face efforts. The group is collaborating with businesses and civic-minded organisations affected by the rioting, including Manchester Arndale, RiotCleanUpManc – Official, Manchester City Council, Virgin Trains, The Co-operative, Visit Manchester and Gaydio. Already, t-shirt sales sporting the I Heart MCR logo have begun at the I Love MCR stall at the Arndale, with profits to go to the Forever Manchester and RECLAIM charities (for non-locals, t-shirts can also be purchased here).
We canvassed the offices recently to tabulate some of the things we loved about Manchester. We had no shortage of responses, from the organised gatherings to the inherent traits of what makes being a Mancunian a venture of love…
“I love its architectural style and its diversity.”
“I like it for the shopping options.”
“It has a great industrial heritage.”
“It really is quite a safe city to be in and you can easily get around.”
“Coronation Street, of course!”
“It is a friendly city.”
“I’ve always enjoyed the European feel of the Christmas market and the dynamic nature of the Chinese New Year celebrations.”
“In the wake of devastation, Manchester has a great history of picking up the pieces and rebuilding.”
“The police have been very transparent in terms of modern communications and engagement within the community.”
While its unfortunate that a series of events that will live in infamy inspired such pride, it’s good to know and feel that the pride is back!
