APMP Diary – One Week ’til Exam Time

With my week long APMP Course just around the corner, I thought I’d put together a final installment of my diary for now before embarking on my APMP adventure (PDF) next week. I have to say that although the thought of a 3 hour exam is still slightly daunting given my lack of recent experience in exams, I am looking forward to it. I’m hoping that the revision and reading I’ve been doing over the past few weeks will start sticking a little more solidly once I’m back in the classroom environment trying to add some practice to the theory.

Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been focusing predominantly around the areas of planning and execution. Given that these areas tend to be a little more oriented towards mathematical analysis rather than interpretation, I felt it would be worthwhile dedicating some extra time to these topics. My theory on this being that if I can get the various formulas and equations locked in, the questions relating to these areas should hopefully be quite straightforward compared to the interpretation based questions in other areas. That’s the theory anyway…

Gary Holmes (not pictured) continues to study up unto the final two weeks before he takes the APMP Examination.
Two of the biggest topics I have been swatting up on within these areas are Critical Path Analysis and Earned Value Management. Given my previous experience as a PMO Coordinator within an SME Insurance company, Earned Value Management was never really something I came across in any great detail. As such it is a tough concept to get your head around, but having done some work on it I can now really see the benefits of its utilization in relevant organizations.

Anyway, that will be all from me for now until I get back to the office in a week and a half. I’ll be sure to let you know how the course went and I’ll hopefully be in a decent position to provide some guidance as to the benefits of sitting a week long course.

Also, to anyone who might be reading this who’s sitting the course in Stockport next week through QA, I’ll see you there!
