5 Tips for Managing Your Project Team

Every great team has a great manager. This is the same for sports teams as it is for project teams.

Here are some tips to help you manage your project teams:

1) Be specific with your requirements. A common issue with projects is that requirements are not always clear; this can sometimes lead to project failure. PRINCE2 can help you set clear requirements.

2) Set clear targets. I am not saying that living in a target culture is a good thing, but targets can be useful. They are useful for motivation, giving clear direction which should boost your team’s performance.

3) Empower your team. People usually respond to the attitudes of their leaders. If you have high expectations of your team they’ll willingly rise to the challenge. Create the most productive atmosphere by boosting involvement in the decision making process, welcoming contributions, respecting opinions and support independence in self-starters.

4) Communicate. It is important for you to communicate with your team, whether through set team meetings, through encounters at the water dispenser or through daily chat on social media. Use appropriate opportunities to communicate information, demonstrate the projects ongoing viability and encourage perseverance, show appreciation and give rewards. We all like being valued! MoV can help you get more value out of your projects.

5) Create team spirit. To keep the organisation aligned share goals, updates, clarify roles / responsibilities and establish structures that foster personal and team transparency and accountability. Promote an atmosphere of trust and respect; show how every team member is a link in a chain that holds the team and the project together.
