How Long Does It Take to Get a Job After Taking PRINCE2?

This was a question I got asked the other day on the phone. Someone wanting to get into project management had done the obligatory PRINCE2 Foundation course and was raring to go but unfortunately no-one seems to be biting. What’s wrong with organisations that don’t seem to want newly qualified Project Managers like this anywhere near their projects? OK I’m being a little tongue-in-cheek. Only because really I alternate between exasperation and anger really. Putting my feelings aside for a moment, and answering the genuine question posed by someone. How long does it take? There is no set time. There ...

New PMO – the Hub of Innovation?

Is your PMO the hub of innovation in your organisation? Getting used to a new PMO function is a significant cultural change for any project community. An organisation that previously had no centralised project support could feel that a new PMO is a constraining influence, imposing formal processes, and stopping them responding promptly to ad hoc requests. Before the PMO implementation team knows where they are, a significant wall of resistance has built up, with teams talking about the ‘PMO police’ and doing anything to avoid engaging with them, or using the newly centralised processes. An understanding of Kelman’s Levels ...

Is Retraining an Option for Project Managers?

The other day I was having a chat with a Project Manager who was considering their career options. They were a bit fed up with their current job and organisation and felt they were at a careers crossroad. They didn’t know what they wanted to do – anything, everything, nothing. They were just exasperated with themselves for not having a clue about what to do next. It’s a common problem, sometimes you just need to talk to someone else and voice it all out before you can start to understand a few things a bit more clearly. One of the ...

The PMO Conference is Back in Town

I’ve spent the last few months putting together the programme for the next PMO Conference. It’s back this year, 8th June 2016 at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in the heart of London near Oxford Street and Regents Park. It was a sell out success last year and firmly put PMO on the map in terms of a full day of professional thought leadership and insight sessions all aimed at those who work within PMO roles. This time the conference is bigger. A bigger venue with four streams of PMO sessions throughout the day with delegates being able ...

The Project Management Consultant

I’m intrigued. What is a project management consultant? Late last year I did a session for the PMI Virtual Talent Management Conference (it’s still available on demand until March 2016). It was called “Why Project Management Needs a Modern Day Project Management Consultant” My definition about a Modern Day PM Consultant was this:   The widely accepted definition of a consultant or consultancy is: the science of providing objective relevant guidance and counsel to decision-makers without possessing an ownership stake in the decision” The Value Creating Consultant, Carucci and Tetenbaum, 2000 When we chatted about this recently on #pmchat there ...

Moving to the UK: PMI or APM?

I am an experienced Project Manager with over 15 years in the UK working in the Built Environment but for the past two years I have been living and working in Toronto. I have got my PMP from the PMI Institute as that was necessary in this region. Am likely to be coming back to the UK permanently in a few months will this qualification be recognised/transferable as some applications are asking for APM affiliation which I don’t have. I also only took Prince 2 Foundation course. How has Agile taken off in the UK. When I left two years ...

The Spotlight on the Programme Manager

In this year’s Project Management Benchmark Report we decided to add a few more pretty pictures than normal (infographics essentially). It’s always good to represent data and information in different forms and I’m sure we all like a good picture. The image to the right is all about the role of the Programme Manager (just click it to enlarge) or just download the full report here. Of course there was so much data and insights into the role of the Programme Manager that we couldn’t include in the full report or in the image so this article is all about ...
