Predictions for 2007 in project management recruitment

Merry Christmas everyone, the last day at work today and I have a few quiet minutes so I just wanted to reflect on 2006 and think about what will be happening in 2007. This year we’ve seen a steady increase in good programme office roles, I say good because alot of the roles have been in programme offices which are moving away from the administrative version i.e., a support person looking after the documentation, completing reports and taking minutes etc. The good quality roles have been in a variety of organisations but generally they share one common theme – their ...

Too Many Cooks Spoil the Broth

Whilst idling my way through a wet Saturday afternoon watching the Rugby on the tube I came across an article in the December issue of Project Management Today called “Trouble Shooter Hindrance Rather Than a Help”, by a lady called Liz Goodman. It is an interesting read and by the look of it the first of a number articles dealing with hands on implemented solutions to projects – not just the theory. This month the article deals with a multi national project where by the solution requires both an appreciation of the end product and services and that people across ...

To Benefit or not to Benefit, That is the Question

So your Project has been delivered – or has it? You have met all the dates you have spent a bit more than you thought and the some of the deliverables are slightly lower quality than anticipated. So why was your project run presumably to deliver some benefits to the organisation? A project may be delivered successfully however the benefits may never emerge or even be measured. So when does a project end? Within an organisation projects are undertaken to deliver benefits within a programme. So yes the project ends and the Project Manger and team move on. The benefits ...

Designing your Programme and Project Centre of Excellence

Just back from the PPM CoE conference on Friday in Birmingham. Presentations and thought-provoking stuff from David Marsh and David Wilkin and also presentations from OGC and Serco. Another PPSOSIG conference but with a slight difference – it came with the book too – “Designing your PPM CoE – A Strategic Guide” (contact David Wilkin directly though the website to buy the book £27.50). Right that’s the book-selling bit over with…… this book is really a must for anyone faced with the challenge of putting a PMO in place in an organisation and its certainly the most comprehensive and realistic ...

Programme & Project Support Office Roles and Experience

A number of companies are implementing Programme and Project Support Offices and as you might imagine they have a need for key staff to actively manage the direction and remit of the relevant PPSO. These roles are generally working at board level with the PPSO reporting directly to the Managing Director, they require a first class service coordinating and reporting of a number of different projects running throughout the organisations. Roles within Project and Programme offices are on the increase, we think it well well worth considering this area of projects as a good career move and well worth developing ...

London Olympics in 2012

I have been trying to understand how SMEs (Small Medium Enterprises) could contribute and benefit form the London Olympics in 2012. Britain won the bid in July 2006 and since then various organisations have been beavering away putting meat on the bones. Today I wend to a conference where Lord Coe was the guest speaker; he explained to approximately 200 attendees (mostly government agency representatives with a small number of SMEs) more about the London Olympic 2012 activity and organisation. It was a well organized and informative meeting and I will add more notes and updates to this blog as ...

Project Management Podcast – Initial thoughts

Don’t know if anyone is aware of the PM Podcast? I listened to episode 55 on Friday night as I was driving to Newbury (what an exotic life I lead!), the topic up for discussion was project management certification. The podcast is led by Cornelius Fichtner – a curious character (it took me ages to work out who he sounds like – I’ll not share those thoughts at this point – have a listen and let me know what you think). The podcast is very US-based at the moment but it does still give food for thought wherever in the ...
