In the Blue corner “The APM” (Royal Blood is Blue!)

I have just been to see the APM (Association for Project Management) in High Wycombe where my goals were two fold – find out what they are doing in terms of membership and also when asked why would we recommend them to candidates and clients. I have come a way with a much better feeling about the APM I think it is going through a period of much needed change starting to focus on the practice of Project Management, as opposed to a certificate that proves you can pass exams from an open book or as some have stated just ...

Winning over the case for a business case

I was thinking about an experience I had where previously business had been poorly controlled and now new ‘draconian’ control guidelines have been put in place – i.e. no project will be started with out a business case being approved. Working with the people to assist them to write the business case was often a large mountain to climb with a lot resistance. All they really wanted to do was execute and deliver. A problem to the organisation was that that the delivery did not always happen with many activities in fact the majority, would be started and then parked ...

Project Management Software – A few thoughts

Just got back from the PPSOSIG conference (Programme and Project Support Office Specialist Interest Group) more about that later… Part of the day was a Gardeners Question Time, putting PPSO relating questions to a mixed panel of people. Anyway, one of the questions was around tools – what tools would the panel recommend for PPSO. The interesting thing about the response from people both on the panel and in the audience was that MS Project and Excel were the tool of choice. OK so we’re only talking about 35 people but if the overwhelming majority are using just these tools, ...

Rendered speakless?

Sitting in a traffic jam this morning, I got thinking about the Age Discrimination thing again (it’s something I’m really aware of now everytime I speak to anyone!) All the information that’s been coming out over the last year is all well and good, there are some good examples of what it really means in practice (i.e., how to write the job specification, how to advertise a new job etc., etc.). I got thinking about the actual job interview, would this be the first time in history that the candidate is more in charge here than the client who is ...

And in the red corner – PRINCE2

I was having a conversation the other day with a colleague of mine about the merits of qualifications – all I seem to hear these days are PRINCE and MSP and unfortunately started to rant on about this for a while. It did get me thinking though, I get a lot questions through phone calls to the office and careers clinics from people who are seriously planning to spend £2K on a PRINCE2 course when they have no experience of project management. If the thoughts are already there to spend serious money like that – what course would I recommend? ...

Is the UK Age Discrimination legislation yet another Camel?

Since October 2005 when I walked past the Age Positive stand at the CIPD show with my colleague Lindsay we started to take a look at the implications of the age discrimination act and what it means. On first look – ok so you should hire based on experience, on second look and discussion what is this, has the legislation been properly thought through, are there any precedences from other countries or states where this type of legislation has been implemented before, what are your thoughts and ideas on the impact of the act, even the Archers on Radio 4 ...
